Chives possess several notable qualities that make them a popular herb in culinary applications. These slender, green, and grass-like plants are known for their mild onion flavor with subtle hints of garlic.
Chives are highly versatile and can be used as a fresh garnish or ingredient in a wide range of dishes, including salads, soups, sauces, and dips.
Spring Onions can be harvested when they reach a height of about 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches). To harvest Spring Onions, snip the leaves close to the base, leaving about 2.5cm (1 inch) remaining. This allows the plant to regenerate and continue growing.
You can harvest the entire plant by cutting it back to about 5 cm (2 inches) or selectively harvest individual leaves. Selective harvesting is generally preferred as it allows the plant to continue producing new growth.
