Every month, Grobrix partners with KPMG to host a Farm-to-Table Salad Bar at their Singapore office clubhouse as part of their ‘Fun Fit Friday’ sessions that turn a workday into a celebration of wellness and sustainability. By emphasising zero food miles, zero food waste, and zero single-use plastic wrappers, and with KPMG providing their own reusable Tupperware for employees, these events really showcase Grobrix’s sustainability value propositions.
The Challenge: Advancing Sustainability Goals
KPMG, a global leader in professional services, continuously seeks innovative ways to achieve their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals while uniting their diverse workforce. Annual events like beach cleanups, while valuable, occur infrequently and limit ongoing engagement. To address this, KPMG aimed to find a regular, inclusive initiative that would resonate with employees across all levels, embedding sustainability into their daily workplace culture with broad appeal.
The Grobrix Solution: A Farm-to-Table Salad Bar
Since its installation in KPMG’s clubhouse, our Grobrix urban farm has been a sustainability initiative cornerstone, growing non-GMO greens like kale, sorrel, and an array of lettuces. On workshop day, at 11:30 AM, volunteers harvested these greens, which were washed and prepped by 12:30 PM. Employees then crafted custom salads, blending fresh harvests with nuts, seeds, dressings, and protein options like grilled chicken or tofu to complete the meal. Here’s what that looks like on an Instagram reel.
Our mobile urban farm brought the farm-to-table journey to life, with Grobrix team members sharing insights on sustainable growing techniques, inspiring employees to try urban farming at home. KPMG elevated the event by providing Tupperware for each participant, ensuring zero single-use plastics or disposable cutlery. Requiring just 260 cm of wall space, the Grobrix wall made sustainability accessible and engaging. Over 100 employees joined, creating salads and exchanging recipe tips. “It’s like being a farmer in the office,” one participant enthused, capturing the lively spirit.
Value Propositions : Zero Food Miles, Zero Food Waste, Zero Single-Use Plastic Wrappers or Disposable Cutlery
Grobrix’s urban farming installation eliminates food miles by growing greens right inside KPMG’s pantry, delivering unparalleled freshness compared to produce shipped long distances. Employees savored the difference, with one exclaiming, “These greens taste so vibrant, you know they’re grown here!” A Grobrix survey revealed 87% agreed the workshop “brought sustainability to life,” aligning with KPMG’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals through a direct, delicious connection to local food.
The workshop achieved zero food waste by harvesting only what was needed. The Grobrix wall’s modular design produces 8 kg of greens monthly, fuelling team lunches and take-home portions. Trimmings can even be composted given our biodegradable coco coir grow plugs. The fact that 50% of all produce grown is typically wasted, growing this way on site can potentially prevent over 300kg of food waste from ending up in landfills yearly. “It’s amazing to see every leaf put to use,” an employee shared, highlighting the system’s efficiency. This closed-loop approach supports KPMG’s sustainability objectives, reflecting Grobrix’s mission to build resource-conscious food systems.
KPMG’s decision to provide reusable Tupperware for employees eliminated any use of disposable cutlery. When produce is brought home from their office farm rather than purchasing from the supermarket there is opportunity to save thousands of single use plastic wrappers yearly. From many perspectives, it’s a great sustainability initiative.
The Results: A Sustainable, Engaged Workplace
KPMG’s broad ‘Fun Fit Friday’ initiative continues to invigorate employee engagement and has been shown to increase office attendance by bringing teams together in shared, hands-on experiences. The Grobrix wall, designed for water-efficient urban farming can also be used both BCA Greenmark and WELL Certifications.
KPMG now plans monthly salad bars, and their Tupperware initiative has become a standard for these events, embedding sustainability into their workplace culture. With Grobrix, its a partnership that shows how a green wall and a salad bowl can ignite a sustainability movement. Ready to grow a greener workplace? Join Grobrix to sow seeds of change today!
